The Best Skincare Routine for Dry Skin

The Best Skincare Routine for Dry Skin

If your skin often feels tight, looks dull, or has occasional rough or flaky patches, you likely have dry skin. Not sure? See our guide to the 5 skin types or ask Lumi. Dry skin loves layers of moisture and a well-supported barrier. Here is a routine built around comfort and nourishment.

What dry skin needs

Dry skin makes less oil, so it can struggle to hold on to water. The focus is on hydrating ingredients (which attract water) and emollient, barrier-supporting ingredients (which help keep it in). Ingredients to look for include hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, squalane, and panthenol.

The morning routine

  1. Cream or milky cleanser — skip anything stripping; a gentle, non-foaming cleanser keeps moisture in.
  2. Hydrating toner or essence — layer one or two passes to boost hydration. Look for: a hyaluronic or heartleaf-based hydrating toner.
  3. Hydrating serum — hyaluronic acid or a barrier-support serum.
  4. Rich moisturiser — a ceramide or squalane cream to nourish and seal.
  5. Sunscreen (SPF) — a hydrating, comfortable formula, every day.

The evening routine

  1. Oil cleanser — melts away sunscreen and makeup without stripping.
  2. Gentle cream cleanser — the second step of the double cleanse.
  3. Hydrating toner/essence — rehydrate generously.
  4. Nourishing serum — barrier-support or hydrating actives.
  5. Rich night cream — and, a few nights a week, a sleeping mask for extra comfort.

Extra tips for dry skin

  • Apply hydrating layers to slightly damp skin to help lock in water.
  • Be cautious with strong exfoliants; over-exfoliating can worsen tightness.
  • Winter: the toughest season for dry skin — add a sleeping mask and consider a facial oil.
